China has completely suspended Korean drama review approval starting in March 2023, according to data from the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
The suspension of review approval means that no new Korean dramas will be allowed to air on Chinese OTT platforms. As per the Korea Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism no Korean dramas have received review approval from China’s Administration since the first half of 2023. China has also tightened restrictions on Korean games, movies, and other cultural content in recent years.
The suspension of Korean drama review approval and the tightening of restrictions on other Korean cultural content by China is a major blow to the South Korean cultural industry. China is one of the largest markets for Korean cultural content, and the restrictions will make it much more difficult for South Korean companies to reach Chinese audiences.
