This experiment aims to streamline their processes and speed up subtitle releases. Ideally, this would allow them to offer subtitles in more languages closer to the original Japanese release of seasonal anime episodes.
Crunchyroll is also exploring AI for other applications, including user experience personalization, content discovery, and various internal workflows.
It’s worth noting that Crunchyroll faced criticism in October 2023 for the poor quality of subtitles on the first episode of “The Yuzuki Family’s Four Sons.” The episode was temporarily removed after complaints surfaced on social media and their website. They re-uploaded it with improved subtitles after working with the series’ licensor.
In 2021, Sony’s Funimation Global Group acquired Crunchyroll from AT&T for $1.175 billion in cash. Funimation’s home video releases are now available under the Crunchyroll brand.
