We are saddened to share the news of Akira Toriyama’s passing. The famed manga artist died on March 1st at the age of 68 from acute subdural hematoma. His family held a private ceremony.

Toriyama’s career began with Dr. Slump, a serialized manga launched in 1980. This popular series spawned two anime shows and several movies. Following this success, Toriyama created Dragon Ball, which ran from 1984 to 1995. Dragon Ball continues to inspire new manga, anime sequels, and spinoffs to this day. The Dragon Ball franchise, including its anime adaptations, sequels, and films, is world-renowned. The series’ hero, Goku, is a globally recognized character.
Beyond manga, Toriyama’s talents extended to character design for popular video games like Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon.
Most recently, Toriyama was involved in the production of Dragon Ball Daima, the latest Dragon Ball anime series. He contributed to the story and character designs. Additionally, his Sand Land manga recently received an anime film adaptation (released in Japan, August 2022), an upcoming anime series (global debut, March 20), and a game launching in April.
