Players of the popular cooperative shooter Helldivers 2 were recently targeted by a cunning scam on the Steam platform. A fake game, cleverly disguised to appear as Helldivers 2 with a tempting 75% discount, duped unsuspecting players into purchasing it.
Released in February 2024, Helldivers 2 has quickly amassed a dedicated player base, attracting thousands of players daily to fight for Super Earth. This surge in popularity unfortunately caught the attention of scammers seeking to exploit fans’ enthusiasm.
The scam involved a game initially titled “Figurality” on Steam. Deceptive individuals altered the game’s details, changing the name, publisher, and developer to closely resemble the legitimate Helldivers 2. To further entice players, the fake game displayed a misleading 75% discount, creating a sense of urgency and perceived value.
Unfortunately, the scam proved successful, ensnaring some players who fell victim to the deceptive tactics. Disgruntled users took to the fake Helldivers 2 store page, leaving negative reviews to expose the scam and warn others.
“This is a scam,” one player wrote. “The real Helldivers 2 was released in February. Do not give this person your money.”
While the fake game appears to be removed from Steam at present, this incident serves as a crucial reminder for gamers to exercise caution when encountering unfamiliar or seemingly too-good-to-be-true deals on the platform.
