HYBE is under investigation following allegations of a cover-up surrounding the death of an employee. The issue came to light during a state Environment and Labor Committee audit. Rep. Jeong Hye-kyung questioned HYBE’s CEO and chief human resources officer about the circumstances surrounding the employee’s passing.
While HYBE attributed the death to personal illness, Rep. Jeong raised concerns about potential work-related factors, citing the company’s significant expansion and heavy workload at the time. The representative also questioned the absence of an industrial accident report with the Korea Workers’ Compensation and Welfare Service, further fueling suspicions of a cover-up.
HYBE’s CEO, Kim Joo-young, denied any wrongdoing, emphasizing that the death was due to personal illness and dismissing allegations of a cover-up. However, Rep. Jeong countered that cover-ups often involve agreements with bereaved families and requested further details about the incident.
During the hearing, CEO Kim became emotional, acknowledging the concerns raised by the committee members and pledging to address them. She expressed her commitment to protecting artists’ rights and ensuring a healthy work environment within the company.
The incident has sparked debate about the well-being of employees in the entertainment industry, raising questions about the potential for work-related stress and burnout. As investigations continue, the public awaits further clarity on the circumstances surrounding the employee’s death and HYBE’s response to the allegations.
