What is the iPhone SOS feature?
When users are off the grid, that is, without any cellular or Wi-Fi access, they can send iPhone SOS text messages to emergency operators. The feature will ask you to calibrate your phone and point it at the closest satellite. The local emergency room or the Apple relay center will get the emergency message after a successful connection.
Why won’t this work in India?
Each state in India has its emergency number, which furthers the fragmentation of the country’s emergency response system. The uncertainty is exacerbated by private hospitals continuing to operate their emergency numbers. The 911 system in the US, however, is centralized.
Another factor is that the iPhone has a much smaller market share in India (5%) than in the US (52%). Therefore, it makes little sense for Apple to spend millions of dollars on this when few users will use this function. There is a lot more work to be done to implement the iPhone SOS feature than in the US. And from Apple’s perspective, it’s not even worth it.
