Korean Singer and Actress IU has donated 200 million won (USD 137K) to support wildfire victims and help improve firefighter treatment and awareness. The Hope Bridge National Disaster Relief Association announced her donation on March 26. She contributed 100 million won each to both causes.
IU’s Message of Support
IU expressed her sympathy for the victims, saying,
“I hope this can help those affected. My deepest condolences to the victims. I sincerely hope the wildfires are extinguished soon without further casualties.”
She also thanked the firefighters, adding,
“I deeply appreciate the firefighters working tirelessly to put out the fires.”
IU’s Ongoing Acts of Kindness
This is not IU’s first time helping those in need. She previously donated to support flood victims in 2020 and contributed to wildfire relief in the East Sea in 2022.
The Wildfire Crisis in Korea
The wildfire that started in Sancheong, Gyeongsangnam-do, has spread to Hadong and has been burning for eight days. The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters reported that it has affected 48,000 hectares—the largest wildfire in Korean history. This is nearly 80% of Seoul’s total area (65,200 hectares).
Impact of the Disaster
The wildfire has caused 65 casualties, including:
- 28 deaths
- 9 serious injuries
- 28 minor injuries
Additionally, 33,000 residents have been forced to evacuate their homes.
