Nintendo has officially revealed the lead cast for its upcoming live-action Legend of Zelda movie. The news came through Nintendo Today! app and was confirmed by Shigeru Miyamoto on X (formerly Twitter).

Bo Bragason will play Princess Zelda, while Benjamin Evan Ainsworth takes on the role of Link, the series’ legendary hero.

Originally planned for March 26, 2027, the film is now set to premiere on May 7, 2027.

Nintendo and Sony Team Up for Zelda Movie

Nintendo is funding more than 50% of the project. At the same time, Sony Pictures is also investing and will manage global distribution.

Wes Ball, the director behind The Maze Runner trilogy, will direct the film. Shigeru Miyamoto, co-creator of the Zelda series, is collaborating with Avi Arad, a renowned figure in the superhero film industry.

Derek Connolly, who worked on Jurassic World, is writing the screenplay.

Zelda Film: A Long Time Coming

Discussions about adapting The Legend of Zelda have been around for years. In 2015, The Wall Street Journal reported on a possible Netflix series. However, Nintendo denied it. Then in 2019, The Wrap claimed Adi Shankar was in talks for a Zelda series. Shankar later clarified on Instagram that he was producing an animated Devil May Cry series, not a live-action one.

The recent push for a film comes after the major success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. That animated hit, released in April 2023 and topped box offices in over 60 countries.

Zelda Shines in Recent Game Releases

Nintendo continues to grow the Zelda franchise beyond games. In September 2024, the company released The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom for the Nintendo Switch. This marked the first mainline title where Zelda is the lead playable character instead of Link. The game features a top-down perspective and a visual style inspired by the 2019 Link’s Awakening remake.

Before that, Tears of the Kingdom launched in May 2023. It served as the sequel to the acclaimed Breath of the Wild, which originally debuted in 2017.

Final Thoughts

The live-action Legend of Zelda film is one of the most exciting game-to-movie projects in years. With a talented cast, major studio support, and trusted creators behind the scenes, expectations are sky-high.
