As per The Wall Street Journal, Netflix intends to continue licensing well-known games as part of its gaming portfolio. The report also suggests that Netflix is exploring the possibility of striking a deal with publisher Take-Two Interactive to introduce a game set within the Grand Theft Auto universe
However, WSJ does not provide further details about the potential deal or confirm any discussions between Netflix and Take-Two. However, GTA has a history of venturing into mobile gaming, offering titles like “Chinatown Wars.” This experience could make it a suitable addition to the Netflix catalogue.
Netflix’s foray into interactive gaming does not currently generate revenue. Instead, it aims to enhance user engagement by offering downloadable games at no additional cost, giving viewers more reasons to return to the platform. The strategy has proven successful, with impressive year-on-year growth in-game downloads. As of September 2022, Netflix games have been downloaded over 30 million times. This number had surged to 70.5 million downloads by 2023.
The potential addition of a GTA game could significantly boost Netflix’s gaming vertical, further expanding its presence in the gaming industry.
