Entertainment news site Deadline revealed on Monday that Universal Pictures is turning Sega’s iconic arcade game OutRun into a film. Transformers director Michael Bay will helm the project, with Sydney Sweeney (known from Euphoria and Immaculate) producing alongside him. Sweeney is also starring in the upcoming live-action Gundam film, but Deadline notes she’s only producing OutRun for now.
Bay is teaming up with Brad Fuller under their Platinum Dunes banner to produce the movie. Sega’s Toru Nakahara is on board as a producer, while Sega president Shuji Utsumi oversees the development.
A Look at OutRun’s Legacy
Sega launched the original OutRun arcade game in 1986. Players race against a timer to reach the finish line, driving a sleek car through vibrant tracks. The game inspired several sequels and spin-offs, with the latest, OutRun Online Arcade, hitting screens in 2009. Its influence shaped future racing games.
The game’s soundtrack, crafted by Hiroshi Kawaguchi, is a fan favourite among video game music lovers. It even helped spark the synthwave genre, with “outrun” sometimes used as a synonym or subgenre of synthwave.
