Veteran South Korean actress Lee Joo-sil has passed away at the age of 81 after a battle with stomach cancer.

According to reports, Lee Joo-sil took her last breath at around 10:20 AM on February 2. Her funeral will be held at Severance Hospital in Sinchon, with visitation starting on February 3. The final ceremony is scheduled for February 5.

Last year, Lee Joo-sil appeared on MBN’s “Special Scoop World” and shared her health struggles, revealing, “I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer and was given only a year to live.” Despite battling the disease for 13 years, she was declared cancer-free—only to later discover that the illness had returned.

Lee Joo-sil began her career as a voice actor and actress in the 2nd TBC voice actor group in 1965. She made her official acting debut in 1964 and built an impressive career spanning nearly six decades.

One of her most recent and recognized roles was playing Hwang Joon-ho (Wi Ha-jun)’s mother in the KBS2 weekend drama “Beauty and the Pure Man” (2023). She also starred in the highly anticipated Netflix series “Squid Game Season 2.”

Her passing is a tremendous loss to the entertainment industry, but her legacy will live on through her unforgettable performances.

May she rest in peace.
