The Xbox Game Pass has been a very lucrative idea for the consumer and publishers alike. It is one of the most successful money-making models for games and media alike. However, Xbox Game Pass is not a sustainable model, according to the founder of Arkane Studios.

Xbox Game Pass Not Feasible According To Arkane Studios

Before the studio was eventually sold to Microsoft as part of its Bethesda acquisition, Raphael Colantonio founded the developer of video game heavyweights like Dishonored and Prey. As a result, it is currently another tool in the megacorp’s subscription service strategy.

However, Colantonio recently stated that Game Pass “is an unsustainable model that has been increasingly damaging the industry for a decade. It is subsidised by MS’s ‘infinite money’, but at some point, reality has to hit. In his view, Game Pass cannot “co-exist with other models”. He adds that it will “either kill everyone else, or give up,” which would unavoidably result in further studio closures.

Although recent sales successes, such as Expedition 33 and Oblivion Remastered, have demonstrated that games can sell well and launch into the service, the general public is no longer concerned about owning the movies that are only available on streaming services. This is undoubtedly what happened to the film industry. Another question is whether that can continue indefinitely.
