GTA is one of the most expansive games ever created. And the Online game mode proves that it can be a true sandbox. While it is unsurprising to think that someone made a GTA Online Movie, it is more fascinating that it got featured in a Film Festival.

GTA Online Movie – Grand Theft Hamlet
Grand Theft Hamlet is an 89-minute GTA Online film that combines humour and documentary style. It was written and directed by Sam Crane and Pinny Grylls. Grand Theft Hamlet’s global rights will be acquired by Altitude Media Group, according to a report published by Deadline.
The narrative centres on two unemployed actors who, in 2021, decide to play GTA Online during the pandemic lockdown. They find the Vinewood Bowl and decide to put on a play of Hamlet by Shakespeare inside the bowl. Making a GTA Online movie is, as one might think, easier said than done—especially in a public lobby.
It doesn’t go well when Sam and Crane try to persuade other actors to perform in a revival of a famous Shakespeare play. Certain players are more than happy to shoot everyone else and wreak havoc.
Without the turmoil and unpredictable nature of the in-game world, though, this GTA Online movie would have been very boring. The movie had its world premiere at the SXSW film festival, which opened on March 8, 2024, and runs through March 16.
