Nikon has developed an AI imaging camera to detect when a cow is about to give birth. It uses an AI to monitor cow behaviors to check this. While this sounds quite absurd, this tech has been amazing in making checking on these cows easy.

For a farm with about 100 cows, the system costs $6,200 a year and consists of an AI system coupled with a security-style camera. It makes use of a specific smartphone application that alerts farmers when a calf is due so they can take necessary steps. This makes it really easy for farmers to check on the cows.
Nikon began AI training in the autumn of 2021, and in February 2023 it conducted proof-of-concept trials on four farms in southwest Japan. The device detects symptoms such as increased movement and the start of the calf’s amniotic sac releasing five hours before labor begins in pregnant cows.
The owner of animals who took part in the tests last year claims that the method seems to work well. Every year, we deliver roughly 60 calves, and starting about a month before they are due, we have to check on the moms every few hours. “This system has been a huge assistance,” Keita Higuchi stated. As technology advances and becomes more approachable, we may see it becoming common among farmers.
