Valve And The Million Dollar Lawsuit

Vicki Shotbolt, the children’s digital rights campaigner led the action with law firm Milberg London. Vicki accuses Valve of rigging the market and taking advantage of UK gamers.

According to Shotbolt, the developer and digital distribution corporation is “shutting out” all competition in the PC gaming market as it “forces” game publishers to sign off on price parity agreements, allegedly barring them from offering lower rates on other platforms.

The assertion is supported by two more points: any future add-on material for purchases made on Valve’s platform must likewise be purchased on Steam. Steam charges developers an excessive commission of up to 30% for selling games on the digital platform. Furthermore, a new webpage representing the claim explains why Shotbolt considers these actions unfair. She points to British law: “Companies who hold a dominant position in a market are not allowed to charge excessive or anti-competitive prices.”

According to the website, over 14 million PC players in the UK “could have been overcharged by Valve.” The petition states that each UK gamer is due between $30 and $60 which is about £22 to £44. Furthermore, this is not the first lawsuit the company has faced. Indie Game studios have also accused Valve of overpricing before.
