Google Chromebooks Codenamed Herobrine, Hades, and Agah
In an effort to capture a larger share of the enthusiast PC market, Google started a project in 2021 to create Chromebooks that are specifically focused on gaming. However, this wasn’t possible until Google stopped using integrated GPUs.
In 2022, hints of a Chromebook with a more local gaming focus started to appear. A discrete GeForce RTX 4050 GPU was installed on the reference motherboard code-named Hades; this chip will power entry-level Windows-based gaming laptops. Additionally, Google created reference designs for Agah and Herobrine using independent Nvidia graphics processors. As a result, Chromebooks built with these boards won’t be sold.
Google had been able to modify the Steam client for Chrome OS, which is based on Linux. Numerous Windows games may be played on ChromeOS because of the Linux architecture that is included in the operating system. But there were difficulties running them on the Google Chromebooks. Important programs like anti-cheat solutions for several online games were still incompatible as of November 2022.
In truth, these computers would have been far less desirable for gamers than conventional Windows laptops due to the difficulties of transferring Windows games to Linux and Linux programs to ChromeOS. Google’s decision to give up on the project may have been motivated by this, as well as a general decline in the PC market and the difficulties involved in integrating Nvidia GPU drivers into ChromeOS.
