Jungkook of BTS has denied allegations that his solo song “Seven” plagiarized the song “Time of Mask” by Fin.K.L.
Big Hit Music, Jungkook’s agency, said in a statement on August 22 that “Seven” is a song created by five foreign composers and has nothing to do with “Time of Mask.”
The statement continued, “The allegation of copyright infringement is a one-sided claim that does not meet the standard.” The controversy began when Alpha Economy reported on August 22 that “Seven” borrowed the main parts of “Time of Mask.”
Composer Yang Joon-young, who participated in the composition of “Time of Mask,” is said to have sent explanatory materials including sound sources and musical scales to Hive’s main producer, Mr. A.
However, Big Hit Music said that “Seven” was created independently of “Time of Mask” and that there is no evidence of plagiarism.
Jungkook’s “Seven” is a pop ballad that topped the US Billboard charts “Global 200” and “Global (excluding the US)” for four weeks in a row. It also entered the UK’s official chart “Single Top 100” for five weeks in a row.
The plagiarism controversy is a setback for Jungkook, who has been praised for his songwriting skills. However, Big Hit Music said that they will take legal action against anyone who spreads false information about Jungkook and his music.
